| "Essjay" is the spelled-out form of my initials, S.J.; it is an old nickname I picked up. Others sometimes confuse me with Sj, but we are not the same person!
On Wikipedia, I fill a number of roles: Administrator, Bureaucrat, Checkuser, Oversight, Election Official, Mediation Committee Chairman, Bot Approvals Group, and several more. I am also an administrator for Meta, Commons, and Wikiquote. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.
Below is more information about me, my thoughts on Wikipedia, and what I do here. Interspersed are various featured images from Wikimedia Commons.
If you have questions about Wikipedia and how things work, please feel free to leave me a message on my talk page.

Wikipedia
Every user has a WikiPhilosophy, even if they haven't written it down. We all have our thoughts about the site and its contributors, and our policies about our contributions. I've chosen to write mine down.

I believe Wikipedia is an amazing project. I also believe that far too few individuals recognize and respect the need to work collaboratively on such a project. I support a policy of neutrality, community building, and mutual respect with the aim of making Wikipedia a better encyclopedia and a stronger community. My Wikipedia motto is "Lux et Veritas" ( Light and Truth) and I believe more individuals should contribute with an intention to bring light to the community and truth to the encyclopedia.
I believe the Wikipedia community is essential to the encyclopedia. While Wikipedia is first and foremost an encyclopedia, it is only via the community of dedicated users that choose to be associated with the project that the encyclopedia is improved. When the Wikipedia community is downplayed, degraded, or ignored, it is both an attack on the credibility of the encyclopedia and an attack on the value of its contributors. Were it not for the dedication of the community, the encyclopedia would not exist, and it is important to recognize and respect this truth. Any action that strengthens the community strengthens the encyclopedia, and anyone who does not acknowledge the importance of community building does not understand the essential nature of the community to the encyclopedia. To deprive the community is to destroy the encyclopedia.
I avoid controversy onsite whenever possible. I do not contribute to controversial articles, and I do not involve myself in content disputes between users. I maintain a neutrality policy to set out my general approach to remaining neutral.

I contribute to Wikipedia because it is enjoyable, and because I believe it is a worthwhile project. When contributing here stops being enoyable, I stop contributing.</br>
I used to contribute a lot to theology articles; I don't anymore because I found that I could be of better use elsewhere. Should you run across a theology contribution from me, it is important to remember that I am a Catholic scholar, not a Catholic.
I do not subscribe to any of the deletion philosophies, and do not participate often in deletion discussions, though I did at one time. While I rarely protect pages that are involved in edit disputes, I do protect a small number of vandalized pages. I block a large number of users each month, many of whom are sockpuppets.
I promote a fair number of RfAs each month, and handle the majority of user rename requests and bot flag matters. I run a large percentage of the public checkuser requests, and a smaller number at the request of the Arbitration Committee and the Foundation office. I have been fairly conservative with the oversight permission, though I am available and willing to handle requests.
I believe that most matters should be discussed and that the decision of the community should be respected. The responsibility of those with restricted permissions is to render impartial service to Wikipedia. I believe that the will of the community, as established by consensus is paramount.

I am one of three Election Officials for the 2006 Board of Trustee's election; my job, along with Datrio and Aphaia, is to coordinate and oversee the election to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Angela Beesley. The Election Officials set the qualifications for candidates and voters, as well as overseeing the election itself, striking invalid votes and tallying the results.
A brief schedule for the election:
- 0:00 UTC August 1, 2006: Acceptance of candidates begins.
- 23:59 UTC August 28, 2006: Acceptance of candidates ends.
- 0:00 UTC September 1, 2006: Election begins.
- 23:59 September 21, 2006: Election ends.
Candidates must be 18 years old (per Florida law), must be an active contributor on at least one project, must have 400 edits minimum on the same project, and the first of those edits must have been made at least 90 days prior to August 1, 2006. More information is available on Meta.
Being on the Board is a very large responsibility: Candidates should be aware of the time, travel, and financial requirements of a Board position. Users unsure of the requirements are encouraged to review materials available at BoardSource.org, and to speak with the current Trustees.
